Sketch Cards A Book of 130 Portraits
In 2011 I began a side project to explore a new drawing and inking style while exercising my ability to capture likenesses I would not normally draw. I hoped the project would not only improve my illustration skills but also my productivity through the year. The project finished with 130 sketch-card portraits of characters from some of my favorite films and TV shows.
It was fun to look back and see which characters I had chosen and how my illustration style evolved through the year. This book is a collection of all those portraits.
Details: 4.25” x 6” 132 page (it’s a chunk!) black & white
You can find it in our Etsy Store or in my NEW Tiny Ghost Stories Store!

They aren’t really a duo as these two never fought side-by-side, but what would Kyle be without the Terminator?  Alive, I guess.

200 Portraits Project - Horror Edition
At the beginning of 2011 I started a small, side project called The 200 Portraits Project. It was/is an attempt to create 200 trading-card sized portraits to explore capturing likenesses while experimenting with a different inking technique. Well…I’m still working on reaching #200 so to celebrate Halloween and all things Horror (which I LOVE) I have 31 NEW portraits I’ll be posting through the month of October…starting Monday 3rd.

WooHoo…broke 100! This is the last of the batch of sketch cards I created with my nephew last week. Thanks to everyone who has been sending me suggestions for more 80s films! Just to let folks know what movies will be coming soon based on your feedback…Footloose, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off…and then the ambitious Fast Times at Ridgemont High! Then others ;)Not sure what this whole portrait project is about? Visit my first post here.

I haven’t watched this movie in a long, long time…but it’s on my list of 80s movies to revisit. Out of all the 80s movies I described to my nephew while drawing these sketch cards…Gremlins captured his attention the most. He’s 7-the age where death can seem both curious…and hilarious. I don’t know how many times he had me describe, in detail (the best I could recall), the various ways Gremlins were killed. Blenders and microwaves…I think sunlight…explosions…I don’t know! I need to re-watch it and my nephew needs to see it! I’m sure he’d laugh.

I saw this movie as a child in the theater. I remember liking it and I even own the DVD…but E.T. never fell into my realm of movies I’ve obsessed over. I gave it another watch the other day in a desperate attempt to recapture the magic I felt watching Super 8…and it worked! It wasn’t the infamous bike chase (which would normally be my bag). It wasn’t even the bond this little boy makes with an Extra Terrestrial. It was the bond of the three siblings that captured me. The way they interacted, worked together and generally cared for each other. Good stuff. I now have a whole new appreciation for this movie.

I can not say how much I adored this movie. In fact I’ve gushed and swooned over it so much…Brian now is annoyed by it (I drug him to see it twice in one weekend).  But what can I say…kids, flashlights, monsters, a good script, a reflection of everything good about 80s film = perfection.
These are part of a batch of sketch cards I created with my nephew last week. It was remarkably easy to get my nephew excited about these movies as I briefly described the plots. Can’t wait until we can watch Super 8 together. Not sure what this whole portrait project is about? Visit my first post here.
